August 16, 2007 – Confirma, developer of CADstream and leader in computer-aided detection (CAD) for breast MRI, announced that it has given an educational grant to the International Center for Postgraduate Medical Education (ICPME) to develop a new curriculum of continuing medical education for breast MRI.

August 16, 2007 - According to a recent study conducted by radiologists at the University College Hospital in Galway, Ireland, radiologists can diagnose venous thromboembolic disease (VTED) in cancer patients earlier by looking more carefully at CT scans of the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis which are regularly done to determine the extent or stage of the cancer.

Venous thromboembolic disease can be fatal if left untreated. The study focused on pulmonary embolism (PE), inferior vena cava (IVC), and iliac and iliofemoral deep venous thromboses (DVTs) in oncology patients.

August 16, 2007 - Dynamic Imaging recently announced that Prime Healthcare Services’ Montclair Hospital Medical Center in Montclair, CA, has installed Dynamic Imaging’s IntegradWeb PACS, a Web-based picture archiving and communications system (PACS), reportedly allowing the hospital to provide improved service to its patients and referring physicians by eliminating the need for traditional X-ray film while quickly transitioning to an all-digital workflow.

August 16, 2007 - Royal Philips Electronics will acquire XIMIS Inc., a provider of a next-generation Radiology Information System (RIS), which will be incorporated into the Healthcare Informatics business group of Philips’ Medical Systems division.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2007. No financial details on the transaction were disclosed.

XIMIS’ key product is XIRIS (Extended Internet Radiology Information System), a Web-based RIS, scaling from community hospitals up to large, multiple facilities hospitals.

Haemoscope Corp. has developed PlateletMapping assays, combining automated platelet aggregation with the
company’s proprietary TEG 5000 (Thrombelastograph) Hemo-stasis System.

August 15, 2007 - Innovative Spinal Technologies Inc. (ITS) announced the U.S. commercial launch of the Paramount VBR System for minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery.

FDA cleared in January 2007, the Paramount VBR System has been available in limited release since February and is now available nationwide.

August 15, 2007 — Spirometry testing is a widely accepted and encouraged diagnostic method for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but new research shows that it is not used nearly enough.

The study appears in the August issue of CHEST, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and reports that only one-third of patients with a COPD diagnosis ever received spirometry testing.
