August 21, 2007 — Varian Medical Systems has received FDA 510(k) clearance for a "smart" radiotherapy treatment planning tool that will enable clinicians to significantly reduce the amount of time needed to plan advanced treatments, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).

August 21, 2007 — FDA clearance of Roche Diagnostics' 9-minute Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) test during parathyroid surgery reportedly provides faster results for surgeons, which may result in shorter surgeries for patients.

The FDA gave Roche Diagnostics clearance in late July to market the test for use during surgery. The test is used on Roche's Elecsys 1010 and 2010 systems and cobas e 411 analyzer and has been available for non-operative use since April.

August 21, 2007 - In a signal of momentum for greater use of e-prescribing by America's physicians, the state of Minnesota has taken steps to require physicians contracting with the state employee health plan's medical networks to use e-prescribing by 2011, said the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA) Aug. 20.

August 20, 2007 - Mediware Information Systems Inc. reported its MediREC automated medication reconciliation product for hospitals is exceeding expectations since its release in May.
The system enables healthcare facilities to document and reconcile medications taken by patients at home, prior to prescribing additional drug therapies within the hospital environment. The process is mandated by the Joint Commission, which oversees the accreditation of hospitals, to avert potential drug interactions and adverse drug events when patients are admitted.

August 21, 2007 - TeleTracking Technologies announced it will automate patient flow at New York City’s Montefiore Medical Center as part of an initiative to accommodate expected patient increases when several surrounding health facilities close.
The 1,122-bed health system will adopt a suite of TeleTracking solutions designed to manage existing bed capacity more efficiently and avert hospital overcrowding.
