January 7, 2008 - Research Corporation Technologies (RCT) has granted Biosound Esaote a nonexclusive license to pioneering patents owned by RCT that broadly cover ultrasound tissue harmonic imaging (THI), joining Acuson Corp., a Siemens company, Royal Philips Electronics and GE as a licensee of the technology.

January 4, 2008 – Respironics’ new OmniLab multi-mode titration system is intended to help sleep technicians titrate more types of patients than ever before.

The device incorporates six modes of therapy with multiple technologies, which can be accessed directly from a PC. Sleep technicians can choose the most effective therapy for each patient, all from one system. Patients can be titrated without interruption as they won’t need to move to another room in order to be titrated on a different system.

January 3, 2008 - BD Diagnostics said Jan. 2 it received clearance from the FDA for the BD GeneOhm StaphSR assay, which the company says is the first test to rapidly and simultaneously identify two deadly healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) - Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) - from patients with positive blood cultures.

BD says the test will enable physicians to implement the right treatment at the right time for patients with bloodstream infections, thereby transforming patient care and significantly reducing healthcare costs.

January 3, 2008 - Mitchell Sheinkop, M.D., will be the first in the U.S. to surgically implant the just-approved Nex Gen LPS-Flex mobile bearing knee on Feb. 20 at the Neurologic and Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago.

Last week, the FDA approved the Zimmer Holdings knee, which the company says is the next generation of knee prostheses for active adults, especially amateur and professional athletes.

Dr. Sheinkop was one of eight physician investigators in the U.S. who participated in the clinical trial proceeding FDA approval.

January 3, 2008 – California’s safe hospital staffing law, achieved through years of advocacy by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, completes its phase-in period as ratios on several units were lowered on Jan. 1, 2008 to meet state mandates for minimum safe care.

Over the five year course of their phase-in, the association said these ratios have revolutionized hospital care and improved patient safety by mandating hospitals maintain minimum, specific nurse-to-patient staffing ratios for all hospital units at all times.
