August 29, 2008 - CMS Inc., an Elekta Co., reported today that three sites have delivered clinical treatments utilizing its Monaco next-generation intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) treatment planning system.

Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA), Erasmus Medical Center (Rotterdam, Netherlands) and Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital (Milwaukee, WI) have all begun producing treatment plans with the application.

August 29, 2008 - Truman Medical Centers (TMC) became one of the first hospitals in the U.S. to install the Siemens SOMATOM Definition AS 128-slice CT scanner this week. The 128-slice CT scanner is a highly adaptive scanner, providing exceptional image quality with minimal radiation exposure to the patient.

The Siemens SOMATOM Definition AS 128-slice CT scanner was recently approved by the FDA, and developed with adaptive dose shielding technology that reportedly eliminates unnecessary radiation exposure to the patient through the pre and post scan range.

The TheraView electronic portal imaging device (EPID) is an Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) cancer treatment verification system, designed by Cablon Medical in the Netherlands. The foundation of the TheraView Electronic Portal Imaging System is based on verification, accuracy and flexibility. By bringing radiotherapy images live and on-line, the TheraView EPID reportedly provides radiation oncologists and therapists with a more precise, effective alternative to time-consuming and inconvenient port film.

August 28, 2008 — Less than a year into the process, RamSoft has successfully helped PresGar, the nation’s largest privately owned medical imaging service company, establish a significant digital mammography presence at eight of its imaging centers.

The result has been increased efficiency among PresGar mammographers and technologists and savings for the company, according to RamSoft. If things go as planned, a ninth center may soon join the mix, combining RamSoft’s PowerServer PACS and Gateway Routers with PresGar’s new digital mammography system.

The annual program offers two-year, $80,000 Basic Research Fellowships,and one-year, $75,000 Translational Grants to young, exceptional brain tumor researchers in the U.S. and Canada.

August 28, 2008 – Patients made an estimated 24.5 million radiation therapy or related visits to 2,110 U.S. radiation oncology sites in 2007, approximately a 5 percent increase over 23.2 million visits in 2006, reported IMV Medical Information Division in a recent study.

The top three cancer site types include prostate, breast and lung cancer, which account for 21 percent, 20 percent and 13 percent, respectively, of all cancer site types treated using radiation therapy.

August 28, 2008 - Confirma and MEDRAD have signed an agreement that enables MEDRAD to sell CADstream version 5.0 in the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy, while Confirma agrees to install, train and support all CADstream customers.

Under this agreement, MEDRAD will be selling Confirma's next-generation CADstream version 5.0 for breast and prostate in the European Union. This version of CADstream is currently under clinical investigation in the U.S.
