Stroke patients who need emergency care should be taken to the nearest certified primary stroke center, which acts as a central point for stroke treatment, according to recommendations from the Brain Attack Coalition (BAC), a group representing medical, scientific, nonprofit and government leaders in the field of stroke. The recommendations, which reflect advances in stroke treatment over the past decade, are published online in the September issue of the journal Stroke.

August 29, 2011 – Elekta announced it has received approval to CE Mark its Integrity R1.1 treatment control system in the European Union. Integrity R1.1 combines a three-tier safety system with continuously variable dose rate (CVDR) and interdigitation capabilities for Elekta's MLCi2 multi-leaf collimator (MLC). Integrity supports a complete range of delivery techniques –– including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and stereotactic applications –– while ensuring maximum patient safety.

Hard to believe 18 years have passed since I dropped into the engineering lab of Diasonics Ultrasound, a visit brought to mind today by the unveiling half way around the world of another advance in diagnostic ultrasound. That visit and today’s announcement in Vienna, Austria, at the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology demonstrate what ultrasound has become and, for the foreseeable future, will continue to be.

August 25, 2011 — US Oncology Research (USOR) and Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) announced that USOR has earned Full Member status. As a Full Member, USOR has proven to be a leader in radiation clinical trials. The organization is one of fewer than 50 to reach this status.

August 25, 2011 — Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Fast Track designation to its investigational compound, radium-223 chloride, exclusively licensed from Algeta ASA. The compound is for the treatment of castration-resistant (hormone-refractory) prostate cancer in patients with bone metastases.

August 25, 2011 — Konica Minolta Medical Imaging announced the implementation of the wireless Aero digital radiography (DR) system at Sanford Health, the largest, rural, non-profit healthcare system in the United States. Sanford installed two Aero DRs in the emergency department (Trauma 5) and will order three additional units. The company will order one portable unit for the main radiology department, one stationary and one portable for Sanford Heart Hospital, set to open in spring 2012.
