April 30, 2008 - The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) is currently accepting applications for the 2009 grant season, offering two $50,000 grants for one year to support original hypothesis-driven research in the field of imaging informatics for residents, fellows, graduate students and junior faculty.

The expanded SIIM Grant Program includes four additional grant initiatives: a small grant for imaging informatics training, a small grant for product support development, an emeritus mentor grant and a micro grant. The SIIM Grant Program reportedly emphasizes an increased commitment to supporting and expanding imaging informatics research.

The SIIM Small Grant Program is targeted at students and imaging informatics professionals. It consists of two grants, one focused on career development/training opportunities to support hands-on training or experience with a designated mentor or sponsor in the imaging informatics arena, providing $20,000 of support for three to 12 months; the other to support the development of a tool or product for use in the field of imaging informatics, providing $20,000 support for one year.

The Emeritus Mentor Grant provides limited funds ($20,000 of support for one year) for a retired, or semi-retired, expert in imaging informatics to act as a mentor for a trainee (student, resident, fellow) or junior faculty member for hypothesis-driven research. The application must be made jointly by the trainee or junior faculty member and the proposed mentor.

SIIM Micro Grants are to support projects that may need resources that fall between what a researcher is willing to fund personally and what is typically requested in grant applications. A micro grant would support hypothesis-driven experiments of short duration and high risk; prior preliminary data would not be required. Micro grants are for total amounts of $5,000 or less providing support for up to six months.

The deadline for all grant applications is Aug. 1, 2008, and applicants will be notified of the decision of the committee in Jan. 2009. The award period will begin July 1, 2009. At the conclusion of their projects, recipients are to submit a paper to be considered for presentation at the SIIM 2010 Annual Meeting and publication in the Journal of Digital Imaging.

New applications are available at www.siimweb.org/grants.
