Siemens Medical Solutions has introduced SOMATOM Definition AS, reportedly the first adaptive scanner created for strokes, cardiac conditions and cancer, designed to expand CT's role from just imaging to managing patient outcomes.

The SOMATOM Definition AS, awaiting 510(k) clearance, features a large-volume coverage area with a 200-centimeter scan range, a 78-centimeter gantry bore and the ability to add a high-capacity 650-pound patient table, reportedly permitting any type of patient to be imaged rapidly. The system will be available in 40-slice, 64-slice and 128-slice configurations.

Encompassing 4D Spiral and 27-centimeter detector coverage, the Definition AS can address functional imaging (perfusion images of blood flow over time) specific to the organ being imaged, allowing the company to provide information beyond simple perfusion and into phase contrast CT. In the case of a stroke, physicians can use whole-organ perfusion imaging for as small or as large of a section as needed. The SOMATOM Definition AS also provides Adaptive Dose Shield technology by blocking extra doses before and after the spiral scan.
