January 17, 2023 — The next term of the National Imaging Informatics Course-Radiology (NIIC-RAD) will be held online March 6-10, 2023. NIIC-RAD is made possible through a partnership between the Radiological Society of North America(RSNA) and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM).

“The NIIC-RAD Course was born out of the recognition that understanding fundamental imaging informatics concepts is essential for the practice of radiology and should be taught to radiology residents, but that not all residency programs had in-house resources or expertise to teach such content,” said Katherine Andriole, Ph.D., who developed the course along with Tessa S. Cook, M.D., Ph.D., and Nabile M. Safdar, M.D. “An online curriculum was created to meet this need.”

NIIC-RAD is the first course of its kind offering imaging informatics education to trainees, practicing radiologists and allied professionals around the world. The course covers fundamentals like clinical workflow and patient centric radiology, and other topics, such as data science, mission learning and 3D printing.

The course format consists of live online lectures, online small group discussions and content available on demand. There are pre- and post-course assessments and homework assignments throughout the term.

While designed with fourth-year radiology residents in mind, the course will benefit anyone looking to increase their skillset within the field, including students, healthcare professionals at all levels, and industry partners.

“Along with live and recorded lectures, the course includes the flipped classroom discussions, on-your-own exercises, and journal articles with contributions from many leading experts in radiological informatics,” Dr. Andriole said. “The course covers the basics, as well as an introduction to emerging topics with an emphasis on the practical use of informatics in clinical radiology.”

Successful participants receive a certificate and qualify for up to 20 hours of SIIM IIP Credits for ABII Certification and Recertification. Additionally, participants can earn a SIIM Course Digital Badge.

RSNA and SIIM have established the NIIC-RAD Scholarship Program to assist residents, fellows, Ph.D. candidates and students who are not institutionally funded to attend the course. The application deadline is February 3, 2023. Selection criteria and expectations are available at https://siim.org/page/niic_scholarship
