After a tornado decimated the hospital only four years ago, Mercy Hospital Joplin in Joplin, Missouri, reopened its doors in March with a new, 900,000-square-foot facility with state-of-the-art equipment. The study — funded through a $321,000 Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of Health (NIH) — will be conducted with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School.

Researchers funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) have developed two near-infrared (NIR) contrast agents that are efficiently taken up by the thyroid and parathyroid glands following intravenous injection. The researchers tested the contrast agents in rats and pigs and showed that they could be used to help distinguish the thyroid and parathyroid glands from surrounding tissue and from each other. Their findings appeared in the Jan. 5, 2015, issue of Nature Medicine.
