The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of 27 of the nation’s leading cancer centers, has been recognized as a qualified provider-led entity (PLE) for the new Medicare Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) Program by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Unlike most brain studies where scientists watch as people respond to cues or commands, Johns Hopkins researchers found a way to observe people’s brain activity as they made choices entirely on their own.

Stomach MRI images combined with functional fMRI of the brain activity have provided scientists new insight into how the brain listens to the stomach during eating.

While active surveillance is often recommended for patients with nonaggressive prostate cancer to reduce unnecessary treatment, the challenge for clinicians is to monitor and distinguish early-stage tumors from advanced cancers.

Alternative imaging procedures, radiation safety and parent education should be the top priorities when considering performing computed tomography (CT) procedures on pediatric patients, according to a literature review published in the scientific journal Radiologic Technology. Among the best practices covered are the importance of education, use of traditional and bismuth shielding and radiologists’ review of examination requisitions.

July 14, 2016 — Adding F-18-choline positron emission tomography (PET) to multi-parametric prostate magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) improves identification of significant prostate cancer over mpMRI alone for targeted transrectal prostate biopsies, according to a new study. MRI-guided biopsies already outperform standard, non-targeted biopsies.

Overlake Medical Center, Bellevue, Wash., recently announced it is formally adopting a new standard of care for prostate cancer treatment with the potential to dramatically decrease instances of over-treatment. The improvements are a result of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies to diagnose and guide biopsies to more accurately identify the cancer type and inform treatment.
