Imagine getting a medical X-ray that comes out blank – as if your bones had vanished. That’s what happened when scientists cranked up the intensity of the world’s first X-ray laser, at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, to get a better look at a sample they were studying: The X-rays seemed to go right through it as if it were not there.

University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands has selected RayStation as its treatment planning system. RayStation will replace the hospital’s existing system for conventional (photon) radiation therapy and will be the treatment planning system for its new proton therapy center. UMCG will have 30 clinical and 16 development licenses in total.

October 26, 2016 — After a period of decline since 2012, the vacancy rate for radiation therapists increased slightly to 2.9 percent in 2016, according to the latest American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Radiation Therapy Staffing and Workplace Survey.


The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said mammograms are still the best tool for breast cancer screening in a public service page it created on its website in October. The FDA said it certifies facilities that perform mammography and it reviews and approves new mammography devices to help keep patients safe.


While radiography remains the gold standard in pediatric imaging, it is rife with opportunities for error because cooperation and positioning are often challenging for such patients. In response, a group of pediatric radiologists practicing in Seattle published a paper that outlines pitfalls in pediatric chest radiography while offering tips and tricks for avoiding potential errors.

At the 2016 annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA 2016), National Decision Support Company will showcase its expanded imaging decision support solution, CareSelect Imaging. The software expands on the range of criteria offered for imaging decision support and adds new core capabilities to the delivery platform.
