Fourteen members of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) took to Capitol Hill recently to express the society’s support for a bill that would expand access to government-funded graduate medical education (GME) opportunities to newly recognized primary specialties, including interventional radiology.

May 24, 2017 — The new American College of Radiology (ACR) Radiologist’s Toolkit for Patient- and Family-Centered Care offers online practice-specific resources to help radiologists enhance patient engagement skills and offer more patient-centered care.

Barco announced that several of its diagnostic display systems will be on display at the 2017 Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) annual meeting, June 1-3 in Pittsburgh. Image Diagnostics Inc. (IDI) recently unveiled the Uni Diagnost, the first integrated multipurpose imaging table, light and camera platform at the American Urological Association (AUA) annual meeting, May 12-17 in Boston.

The University Medical Centre (UMC) Utrecht in the Netherlands recently treated the first patient as part of a clinical study with the Elekta Unity magnetic resonance radiation therapy (MR/RT) system. Elekta Unity is capable of delivering precisely targeted radiation doses and capturing MR images of diagnostic quality. It is the first time a patient has been treated on a state-of-the-art linear accelerator with a high-field MR imaging system, according to Elekta.

According to a new study, diagnostic radiologists on average serve more unique Medicare beneficiaries each year than any other specialty. The work, conducted by researchers at the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute, was presented at the American College of Radiology annual meeting, May 21-25 in Washington D.C.

May 23, 2017 — IBA announced that the first patient has been treated with pencil beam scanning (PBS) technology at the Institut Curie in Orsay, France.
 
Since its opening in 1991, more than 8,000 patients have been treated at the Institute Curie Proton Therapy Center. During this time, the center has gradually upgraded its equipment to increase the number of indications that can be treated. Today, around fifty patients are treated every day in the three rooms available. The rooms include one gantry, one fixed beam and an eye line.
 

Asterias Biotherapeutics Inc. recently announced new positive serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from its ongoing AST-OPC1 SCiStar Phase 1/2a clinical trial in patients with severe spinal cord injury.
