The prevalence of radiographic imaging within the oncologic department, or more specifically, within the radiation treatment room, is the end result of advancements in cancer treatment and to some degree, new knowledge of how cancer reacts to treatment.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., primarily striking individuals 50 and older. Because the disease can be present without any physical symptoms in its initial stages, regular screening — through a fecal-occult blood test every year plus a sigmoidoscopy every five years, or a colonoscopy once every ten years — is advocated for this age group.

You surely have heard the hype from the neighbors and the local media about whole-body MRI or CT screening for individuals with no symptoms of disease. CT screening became all the rage a few years ago as healthy people bet on the powers of medical imaging to detect occult cancers and diseases or write them a clean bill of health.

Hologic Inc. has received clearance from the FDA to use information from the Hologic Discovery Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) system as a predictor of coronary heart disease, stroke and other forms of cardiovascular disease. The new indication, visualization of Abdominal Aortic Calcification (AAC), targets the number one cause of morbidity and mortality in older women and men — heart disease and stroke.

A new ergonomic reading station from Broadwest Corp., the E-Carrell, is a completely flexible work environment for softcopy reading. A lighting system maintains the ambient and background luminance in a ratio to enhance viewing productivity. The height is adjustable, as are the monitor stands and the angle of the desktop’s surface via motorized controls. A privacy and sound barrier completes this digital haven. The system has three components including: a downward task light, a background light behind the monitors and an upward ambient light.

The HLL-404 hand-held “Woods” magnification light is a dual-purpose light effectively used for illumination of traditional dermatology and ophthalmology conditions such as diagnosing skin conditions and corneal ailments. The light is also effectively used for veterinary applications.

Eclipse radiotherapy treatment planning software speeds up the process of planning complex radiotherapy treatments. It incorporates a set of treatment plan templates that streamline the process of creating a personalized plan for each patient.
