The department of diagnostic radiology section of diagnostic ultrasound at the University of Kentucky (UK) recently received a perfect score and was awarded a three-year accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in gynecological and general ultrasound services. The perfect score came from an evaluation in which a series of case study ultrasounds were taken by the department that a physician interpreted to have not flaws in performance or reporting.

Cooper University Hospital, in Camden, NJ, will be one of the first hospitals in the U.S. to offer patients a non-invasive treatment for brain disorders with the new Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion from Elekta. The system brings together innovations that make treatment faster and more accurate.

Researchers at Dartmouth Medical School reported that recurrent memory loss in older adults mirrors brain changes present in patients with very early Alzheimer's, even when standard cognitive tests came up normal.
"Cognitive complaints should be taken very seriously. Those with significant cognitive complaints and concerns should talk with their physicians and get a thorough evaluation," said researcher Andrew Saykin, a professor of psychiatry and radiology at Dartmouth Medical School, in Lebanon, N.H.

The Limburg Oncology Centre announced that it has selected Varian Medical Systems’ integrated and automated treatment equipment and software for its new radiotherapy center that will offer treatments including intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).

Stanford Hospital and Clinics announced yesterday that it put in an order for a portable, self-shielding electron-beam radiation unit by IntraOp Medical Corporation, a technology solutions provider, in a move to create greater flexibility in electron radiation therapy and shorten treatment cycles.

Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands, a healthcare modality developer, installed the Philips Brilliance 64-slice computed tomography (CT) system and Philips Achieva 3.0T at Laughlin Memorial Hospital in Tennessee to perform neurological, pulmonary, cardiovascular, trauma and whole-body studies.
The installation at Laughlin Memorial Imaging Center included a 64-slice CT scanner, the Brilliance 64-channel system, which is designed for advanced exams, including neuro, body, pulmonary, cardiovascular, pediatric, interventional and trauma.

The Dominion from Imaging3 may dramatically improve cardiac patient care in several areas with its ability to produce 3-D images in real time.
Angiography is one area that could reap the benefits of the Dominions offerings. With the Dominion's 3D capability, the direction from which the artery is viewed can be changed, which allows the doctor to see it the progression through the artery has been blocked by plaque build-up, or if the artery has simply turned in a direction that limited, lower resolution, 2D imaging does not allow him to see.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine are excited to be one of the few radiology departments the U.S. that will be receiving an ultra high-field 7 Tesla MRI system. Seven Tesla MRI is not cleared by the FDA for clinical use, but it can be a valuable tool for research, according to Ravinder Reddy, Ph.D., professor of radiology and science director or the Metabolic Magnetic Resonance Research and Computing Center (MMRRCC) at Penn.

Symbion Imaging, a provider of digital imaging across Australia, is the first site to globally adopt the IMPAX Enterprise Productivity Suite (EPS) tool for managing image transfers from Agfa HealthCare. IMPAX EPS is a teleradiology solution developed by Agfa Australia.
The solution monitors study transmissions between sites across an entire health network, and provides global view of study location and status, which allows the radiologist to focus on reporting.
