Enterprise imaging vendors are releasing completely new, revamped platforms that are programmed from the ground up as web-based platforms, rather than older architecture systems that were modified to be used as cloud-based systems

Here is a list of some of the top overarching trends in enterprise radiology systems the editors of Imaging Technology News (ITN) have observed over the past year at the 2020 Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) and the 2021 Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conferences.

The computed tomography (CT) market was valued at $6.7 million in 2020, and it is expected to reach $9.5 million by 2026, with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.76 percent during the forecast period of 2021-2026, according to Mordor Intelligence.
Canon's Vitrea PACS enterprise imaging system was one of several systems demonstrated at HIMSS 2021 that had easily modified hanging protocols. This included ease of use to customize what each radiologists prefers, including slice thickness. #HIMSS #HIMSS21

Taking advantage of new technology advances, several radiology PACS, enterprise imaging and cardiovascular information system (CVIS) vendors are releasing new, completely revamped platforms.

The in-person 2021 Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meeting in August was the first glimmer of the light at the end of a long tunnel in the COVID-19 pandemic a few months ago — the industry’s first sign that things were starting to return to normal.

November 4, 2021 — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) today issued an emergency regulation now requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for all eligible staff at healthcare facilities that participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. 

CMS has set a deadline of Dec. 5 for healthcare facilities to create a COVID vaccination requirement policy and  a deadline of Jan. 4, 2022 for all staff at these facilities to be fully vaccinated.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the world's first photon-counting computed tomography (CT) scanner, the Siemens Naeotom Alpha, on Sept. 30. Both FDA and CT experts say this is the start of a revolution in new CT scanner technology, and is the biggest shift in technology for this workhorse radiology modality in years.

The FDA sent out a rare press release on the approval, noting its importance to medical imaging. 

November 3, 2021 — MIM Software Inc. announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for additional automatically segmented contours and local deployment for Contour ProtégéAI, its robust AI auto-contouring solution.

MIM Software has received FDA 510(k) clearance for additional head and neck, thorax, prostate, and abdomen contours. Quality improvements to existing contours have also been implemented. 

November 3, 2021 — Mirion Technologies, Inc., a global provider of detection, measurement, analysis and monitoring solutions to the medical, nuclear, defense, and research end markets, today announced the acquisition of CHP Dosimetry, a U.S.-based distributor of dosimetry services. The acquisition closed on Nov. 1, 2021.
