As another presidential campaign ramps up to be in full swing by the fall, healthcare promises to be a bellwether issue – a litmus test, if you will – for whomever is chosen to occupy the White House next.
While candidates swirl around several overarching issues, such as universal access and escalating costs, they aren’t really honing in on any of the undercurrent issues fueling the problems being promoted for public consumption.

April 10, 2007 - The number of U.S. radiation oncology sites that perform image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) in their department has risen from 15 percent in 2004 to over one-third, using either a dedicated IGRT imaging device or electronic portal imaging, according to a recent report by the IMV Medical Information Division.

April 9, 2007 – Mayo Clinic and IBM will present at the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging in Washington, D.C., April 12–15, results of a study where they exploited parallel computer architecture and memory bandwidth to increase the processing speed of 3-D medical images by fifty times faster than the average processors, as part of their strategy to enhance image registration and allow radiologists to more easily detect structural changes such as the growth or shrinkage of tumors.

April 10, 2007 - Bionix Radiation Therapy recently introduced its Prone Breast System, a patient positioning device that features a foam cushion set designed to attach to the multi-treatment base, the same base used with the pelvis/belly system.

The Prone Breast System is the newest product in the line of patient positioning devices and uses a reversible carbon fiber breast bridge to hold the contra lateral breast out of the treatment field. Additionally a massage style face cushion supports the head with an opening for airflow allowing patients to breath freely.

April 9, 2007 - Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc. recently developed three imaging techniques for its MR product line, including the Vantage system, that allows for contrast free imaging during MRA procedures.
Toshiba's equipment reportedly utilizes three proprietary contrast-free imaging techniques that can perform MRA, fresh blood imaging (FBI), contrast-free improved angiography (CIA) and Time-SLIP.

April 9, 2007 - According to the New England Journal of Medicine, computerized mammography, currently used for about a third of the nation's mammograms, are more frequently finding harmless spots for unknowing patients.

The computerized method showed no clear capability to find more cancer cases than unaided readings: four cancers were found for every 1,000 mammograms, meaning that CAD would give 156 more unneeded callbacks and 14 more biopsies for every additional cancer it finds.
