April 9, 2007 — British-based PuriCore, a life sciences company focused on the development and commercialization of novel, safe antimicrobial technology, has announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA to market its proprietary Sterilox Endoscopy High-Level Disinfectant System as a medical device in the US.

The Sterilox System produces a highly effective and safe high-level disinfectant solution that is indicated for use in reprocessing and disinfecting heat-sensitive medical instruments, including endoscopes, between patient procedures.

April 6, 2007 - Hospira Inc. introduced a new wireless platform for its medication infusion devices that incorporates leading-edge authentication standards and encryption protocols to assist hospitals in securely transferring data and complying with patient confidentiality regulations. The new technology also provides the first three- in-one wireless multi-band module for an infusion system, enabling hospitals to select any of three frequency modes for communication.

April 6, 2007 - Agfa HealthCare recently announced that Novation has awarded company contracts to provide radiology picture archiving and communications system (PACS) solutions, radiology information system (RIS) solutions and cardiology PACS to the University Health System Consortium, VHA Inc. and HealthCare Purchasing Partners International (HPPI) member facilities.

April 6, 2007 - Kodak's Health Group recently signed contracts for its Kodak DIRECTVIEW digital radiography (DR) and its computed radiography (CR) systems with several U.S. facilities.

Some facilities also purchased Kodak DIRECTVIEW CR Long Length Imaging System to provide long-length leg and spine images and Kodak DIRECTVIEW Capture Link System, which allows facilities to identify, scan and review CR images from multiple networked CR systems and integrates CR images into a DR imaging study.

April 6, 2007 - According to a recent study published by IMV Medical Information Division, patients have made an estimated 23.2 million radiation therapy or related visits in the U.S., including 19 million treatment visits and 4.2 million allied visits.

The top three cancer site types include breast cancer, accounting for 21 percent, prostate cancer totaling about 21 percent and lung cancer with 20 percent.

April 5, 2007 - Accuray Inc. recently announced that its CyberKnife, a robotic radiosurgery system that is capable of treating tumors anywhere in the body, has been used to treat more than 2,000 lung cancer patients worldwide.

The company also reported that the first patient was treated using the recently introduced Xsight lung tracking system, a system that works with the CyberKnife system to track and treat some lung tumors non-invasively.

April 5, 2007 - Novation and the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) recently announced they have awarded non-acute care medical-surgical distribution contracts to 10 distributors, effective now through March 31, 2012, covering services for a broad range of medical-surgical products.

April 5, 2007 - Welch Allyn announced it has entered into a technology integration agreement with Oridion, a medical device company that manufactures products for ventilation patient monitoring. This agreement will allow the Welch Allyn family of electronic vital signs monitoring devices to integrate Oridion's Microstream branded capnography boards and accessories, which are used to monitor end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) non-invasively in patients.

April 5, 2007 - Controversy over the effectiveness of CAD for screening mammography mounted with recent findings from a study led by Joshua J. Fenton, M.D., M.P.H., on the influence of computer-aided detection (CAD) on the performance of screening mammography, which was published in the April 2007 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Researchers found that the use of CAD was associated with reduced accuracy of interpretation of screening mammograms.
