July 18, 2007 - For 2008, the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) is once again offering two $50,000 grants to support original hypothesis-driven research in the field of imaging informatics for residents, fellows, graduate students and junior faculty.

July 18, 2007 - Direx Systems Corp., an exclusive manufacturer for Initia Medical Technologies in the U.S., has signed a distribution agreement with Oncology Services International (OSI), agreeing that OSI will market Initia-RT’s products for radiotherapy in the U.S.

The dosimetry option for the KODAK 2000RT CR Plus System allows physicists to perform a wide range of beam and IMRT quality assurance (QA) procedures — along with the platform’s existing ability to capture portal localization, verification and simulation images required for radiation therapy patients. The 2000RT CR Plus System is an all-in-one CR solution for therapy, simulation and dosimetry imaging.

Nucletron B.V. recently released version 3.0 of Oncentra MasterPlan, a treatment planning system that will become the first TPS on the market to facilitate the import of DICOM RT doses from other DICOM-compliant systems, thereby simplifying the evaluation and comparison of plans.

New features will allow users to adapt and streamline their daily work in the radiotherapy clinic. This new release also reportedly allows TMS-Helax users to more easily migrate their patient data and treatment plans into MasterPlan via a DICOM archive.

CIVCO Medical Solutions will display a comprehensive line of implantable fiducial markers for image-guided localization, including Gold soft tissue markers that are cross-cut with a special knurling process to inhibit migration and are available in a variety of configurations, at the 49th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), July 22-26, 2007 in Minneapolis, MN.

Global Dosimetry Solutions Inc., a division of Mirion Technologies, will display its copper doped quartz fiber in vivo dosimeter that is designed to provide a real-time assessment of tissue exposure to radiation during radiodiagnostic and radiotherapeutic procedures, at the 49th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), July 22-26, 2007 in Minneapolis, MN.

July 17, 2007 — Nonin Medical Inc. recently announced the worldwide introduction of Model 7500, a portable tabletop oximeter.

The 7500 features Nonin’s proprietary PureSAT oximetry technology. PureSAT’s fast pulse-by pulse measurement of oxygen saturation and pulse rate is clinically tested and has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance and European CE Mark.

The 7500 meets ISO 9919 requirements as well as accuracy with motion and low perfusion claims.

July 17, 2007 – FASA, the national association representing ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), commented on the CMS’ final rule to reform the way Medicare sets payments for surgical procedures performed in ASCs. Effective January 1, 2008, the CMS rule sets ASC payment rates at no more than 67 percent of the corresponding hospital outpatient department (HOPD) rates for the same procedures. If proposed HOPD rates are adopted, ASC payment rates would be no more than 65 percent of the corresponding HOPD rates.
