The integration of radiology information systems (RIS) with picture archiving communication systems (PACS) has rapidly become a defining trend in the European RIS market. This latest development has been welcomed by IT professionals in the healthcare sector and as a result sales of RIS systems are expected to increase. A recent study by consultants Frost & Sullivan shows that the market was worth $125 million (US) in 2006 and this is expected to increase to $181 million by 2013.

July 6, 2007 – SonoSite Inc. recently announced it is filing a patent infringement lawsuit against GE Healthcare and certain GE affiliates, acting as a counterclaim to the complaint GE and its affiliates filed against SonoSite on May 15, 2007 in the same court, claiming that SonoSite had infringed on GE’s patents for compact ultrasound technology.

SonoSite is filing its answer to the complaint denying all of GE’s claims and alleging that the asserted patents are either invalid, not infringed, or both.
