April 19, 2011 – A new brachytherapy applicator for treating endometrial cancer patients after a hysterectomy has been introduced. The Capri applicator, from Varian Medical Systems, is aimed at increasing patient comfort and allowing clinicians to better sculpt the radiotherapy dose. It was exhibited recently at the annual American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) meeting in San Diego.

April 19, 2011 – Virtual Radiologic (vRad), has been awarded the 2011 Stevie Award for Sales and Customer Service. vRad Results is a cloud communication tool, hosted and managed via the Internet, that provides secure access to images and radiology reports via mobile digital devices. The company received the award in the Collaboration Solution category.

SNM's Clinical Trials Network (CTN) last week validated its 100th scanner, an important milestone in CTN's two-and-a-half year history. Scanner validation is an essential component of the CTN imaging site qualification program, which works with sites to ensure high-quality imaging capability by assessing both equipment and personnel capabilities.

Contrary to recent media reports, the use of lead shielding during routine breast exams provides virtually no benefit in the prevention of thyroid cancer and may diminish the effectiveness of mammography.
