Accuray Inc. announced that studies on the clinical use of the CyberKnife and TomoTherapy systems continue to reinforce the devices' broad-based radiation treatment capabilities. More than 80 studies were presented during poster and oral sessions at the 57th Annual American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in October. Some of the studies presented show long-term efficacy and safety with median follow-up exceeding five years.

Access Scientific LLC announced validation of the Powerwand midline IV catheter for power-injectable capability up to 8ml/sec, 325 psi for up to 10 cycles. The addition of this performance capability makes both 4Fr and 5Fr Powerwands ideal for virtually all computed tomography (CT) contrast studies, to meet the most demanding injection protocols.

Infinitt North America announced a marketing agreement with Elsevier that will enable Infinitt PACS (picture archiving and communication system) users to seamlessly access STATdx diagnostic decision support for radiology. STATdx, an Elsevier Clinical Solutions product, is used by radiologists to increase speed, accuracy and diagnostic confidence.

CivaTech Oncology Inc. has developed a new U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared radiation source. The CivaString source features 103Pd (palladium) along the full length of the device, which is contained using low-Z polymers.

Not many pharmacists will call up doctors and question their choice of medication. It’s not hard to make a good case for pharmacists to stay out of the practice of medicine, but it’s tougher when it comes to radiologists who are, after all, physicians licensed to practice medicine. Yet referring physicians choose the imaging exams.

A spinout from Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science has raised £1 million from a high net worth Chinese investor to develop an imaging technology which could help doctors detect cancers, particularly prostate and liver tumors. Early diagnosis of cancer has been shown to save lives, and the Oxford technology will allow for improved visualization of tumors for earlier detection.
