April 30, 2026 — The American College of Radiology has congratulated Nicole B. Saphier, MD, on her nomination to be surgeon general of the United States. Saphier would be the first radiologist physician to hold this position.

The surgeon general is nominated by the president and is confirmed by the U.S. Senate for a four-year term. The Office of the Surgeon General is part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

April 29, 2026 —  Results from a new study^* presented at the American Roentgen Ray Society’s (ARRS) 2026 annual meeting in Pittsburgh, PA, examined the potential for AI to identify lung cancers initially missed on routine chest X-ray at a large US quaternary medical center.
