March 11, 2024 — The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) has announced its members have elected four officers to serve on the 2024-2025 ASRT Board of Directors. Additionally, the organization reported it launched its ASRT “Be Seen” public awareness campaign in late February to raise awareness about the crucial role medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play in patient diagnosis, intervention and treatment.

Daniel DeMaio, M.Ed., R.T.(R)(CT), was elected to serve as president-elect. DeMaio is an associate professor and director of the radiologic technology program at the University of Hartford in Connecticut. DeMaio currently serves as vice president on the ASRT Board.
Marissa Mangrum, M.S.R.S., R.T.(T), was elected to serve as vice president. Mangrum is a program director/assistant professor, medical imaging and radiation sciences, at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Mangrum currently serves as treasurer on the ASRT Board.
Jennifer Thompson, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(QM), was elected to serve as secretary. Thompson is the radiography program director and associate professor for Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Beth Vealé, Ph.D., R.T.(R)(QM), was elected to serve as treasurer. Vealé is a professor of radiologic sciences at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The new officers will begin their one-year terms after the 2024 ASRT Annual Governance and House of Delegates Meeting, June 28-30.
President-elect Heather Moore, Ph.D., R.T.(R), University of Cincinnati, will be elevated to ASRT president for the 2024-2025 term, and President Brandon A. Smith, M.B.A., M.S.R.S., R.T.(R)(VI), CIIP, will be elevated to chair of the Board.
Voters also elected 24 chapter delegates, according to the news release issued by the Albuquerque, NM organization. Terms for the newly elected chapter delegates will begin July 1, 2024. See a complete list of the newly elected chapter delegates here.
More than 2,000 ASRT members cast votes for officer and delegate candidates in the 2024 ASRT election. Polls were open from Feb. 13 to March 5. Survey & Ballot Systems, an independent election management service based in Minnesota, managed the election process and independently certified the results of the balloting.
Public Awareness Campaign Promotes Valuable Role of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Professionals
ASRT also has announced that, beginning in late February, 2024, the organization launched its Be Seen campaign today to raise public awareness about the crucial role medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play in patient diagnosis, intervention and treatment.
To highlight the profession, ASRT has partnered with medical imaging professional and actor, Michael Benzaia, R.T.(R)(CT). Outside of Michael’s work as a radiographer and computed tomography (CT) technologist, he’s also known for his on-screen medical professional roles in shows like “General Hospital,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Law & Order” and “The Blacklist.”
“My journey into the world of radiography started at 12 years old from a deeply personal place - accompanying my mother to medical appointments during her battle, which she sadly lost, with breast cancer. Her passing sparked my passion for the medical field and encouraged me to pursue my dreams as an actor,” said Benzaia. “To bring authenticity to my roles, I draw upon my real-life experiences, and I’m thrilled to be using my voice for this campaign highlighting the vital role of medical imaging and radiation therapy in patient care.”
“Health care wouldn’t be the same without medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals, but they often fail to receive the recognition they deserve,” said ASRT CEO and Executive Director Melissa B. Pergola, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(M), FASRT, CAE. She added, “That’s why Danny Gonzales, ASRT chair of the Board and past president, championed this campaign to raise their visibility.”
The campaign includes:
- A commercial/video featuring Benzaia;
- A website highlighting: Medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals’ role performing medical imaging procedures like mammograms and x-rays, administering radiation therapy to treat cancer and other diseases and operating high-tech health care equipment; Their role in diagnosis, intervention and treatment; Patient perspectives and information about ASRT membership and the ASRT Foundation; and,
- Social and digital media content to bolster the campaign’s reach.
In releasing its statement about the public service campaign, ASRT leadership encouraged all radiologic technologists to share the commercial/video available at www.asrt.org/BeSeen and to share ASRT social media posts that highlight the campaign.
