November 21, 2023 — A groundbreaking solution for osteoporosis screening has been announced by medical X-ray technology pioneer IBEX Innovations Ltd.

The Sedgefield, UK-headquartered company’s IBEX Bone Health (BH) technology will now be integrated into DensityScan, an advanced AI-driven workflow for Agfa Radiology Solutions’ DR X-ray equipment.

Agfa Radiology Solutions, which is based in Mortsel, Belgium, is part of Agfa NV, one of the world’s leading companies in imaging technology.

DensityScan, powered by IBEX BH, offers automatic detection from routine X-ray images, and has been designed to provide a cost-effective and accessible solution for healthcare professionals and patients.

The solution has been developed to address the critical need for osteoporosis screening, enabling earlier detection, diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

IBEX BH is a software solution that provides areal bone mineral density outputs from a standard digital radiograph.

By harnessing the capabilities of IBEX BH, DensityScan measures subregional areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and estimates the T-score from wrist X-ray images. This technology provides earlier identification of osteoporosis, with the result automatically available to clinicians in secondary captures archived by the MUSICA workstation. This provides a starting point for assessing fracture risk and initiating diagnosis or treatment.

Osteoporosis is a widespread condition, impacting millions of patients each year, with a significant proportion going undiagnosed and untreated. Early detection of osteoporosis is paramount, and DensityScan has been developed to offer a cost-effective and easily accessible method of opportunistically screening patients from a wrist X-ray which has already been requested for other purposes.

Emphasizing the potential of the technology, IBEX Innovations CEO Paul Scott commented: “Routine access to osteoporosis screening through a simple wrist X-ray offers a route to earlier and more widespread diagnosis of this silent, chronic disease.

“Diagnosis is the first step to change, and we are excited to be working with Agfa Radiology Solutions to put this technology into the hands of clinicians.

“Wrist X-rays are just the start, and we will be widening compatibility to screen even more patients in the future.

“IBEX Bone Health's integration into DensityScan signifies a pivotal shift in healthcare technology, and it stands as a testament to IBEX Innovations’ dedication to pushing the boundaries of innovation to improve patients' lives.”

Paul Danini, Global Software Marketing and Product Manager at Agfa Radiology Solutions, said: “DensityScan is a key part of Agfa's vision to transform radiology by bringing intelligent and definitive answers to patients through X-ray imaging.

“This will especially reduce the risk for women, half of whom will break a bone due to osteoporosis during their lifetime.”

IBEX Bone Health and DensityScan will be demonstrated at RSNA 2023 at McCormick Center, Chicago, Illinois, from November 26th to 30th at the IBEX Innovations booth #3279 and the Agfa booth #2552.
