AI-based software automates contouring process for organs at risk during radiation therapy planning

During the virtual 106th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, Siemens Healthineers announced the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance of AI-Rad Companion Organs RT, the latest Siemens Healthineers artificial intelligence-based software assistant in the AI-Rad Companion family.

November 30, 2020 — During the virtual 106th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, Siemens Healthineers announced the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance of AI-Rad Companion Organs RT, the latest Siemens Healthineers artificial intelligence-based software assistant in the AI-Rad Companion family. AI-Rad Companion Organs RT uses deep-learning AI algorithms to automatically contour organs at risk (OARs) on computed tomography (CT) images as part of the radiation therapy planning workflow and helps facilitate precision medicine.

Identifying and contouring a patient’s normal organ anatomy on CT-based planning images is critical to ensuring the appropriate radiation dose to targeted organs and the minimum level of exposure for normal tissue. Historically, manual contouring is a time-consuming, slice-by-CT-slice process that also can lack consistency, as contours may differ with each radiation therapist or when recontouring.

The deep-learning algorithms of AI-Rad Companion Organs RT automate this contouring process for various body regions, including the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, and pelvic regions, to accelerate contouring. AI-Rad Companion Organs RT also supports the use of organ template configurations that can be aligned with institutional protocols, which may save time and improve standardization in clinical workflows.

“AI-Rad Companion Organs RT provides the radiation therapist with AI-powered organ contouring for a potentially significant reduction in turnaround time,” said Peter Shen, Vice President of Innovation and Digital Business at Siemens Healthineers North America. “AI-Rad Companion Organs RT reinforces the multi-modality and multi-organ approach that Siemens Healthineers has employed with our rapidly expanding AI-Rad Companion family of intelligent software assistants.”

AI-Rad Companion Organs RT is available on the teamplay cloud-based digital health platform from Siemens Healthineers. Like the other software assistants in the AI-Rad Companion family, it is seamlessly integrated into the existing clinical workflow and is DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) compliant.
