Site explains how the ACR is working to advance machine learning applications, provides radiologists resources to participate

New ACR Data Science Institute Website Promotes Radiology Artificial Intelligence Development

October 20, 2017 — The American College of Radiology Data Science Institute launched a new website to promote its efforts to advance, validate and implement artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology.

“The ACR DSI is moving artificial intelligence for medical imaging and the radiological sciences forward. The new website helps explain our work to integrate AI into radiology workflow and improve patient care. I urge those interested in AI, or who want to get involved, to visit the new site frequently,” said ACR DSI Chief Medical Officer Bibb Allen Jr., M.D., FACR.

The new site offers resources to help radiologists and allied stakeholders get involved and understand how imaging AI use is progressing, including:

The site also explains how the ACR DSI is developing a framework for imaging AI implementation that:

  • Defines relevant use cases for development of AI algorithms in medical imaging, interventional radiology (IR) and radiation oncology (RO);
  • Establishes a methodology and provides tools and metrics for creating algorithm training, testing and validation datasets around these use cases;
  • Develops standardized pathways for implementing AI algorithms in clinical practice;
  • Creates opportunities for monitoring the effectiveness of AI algorithms in clinical practice; and
  • Addresses regulatory, legal and ethical issues associated with AI in medical imaging, IR and RO.

“As we enter the era of machine learning, it is essential that we serve our patients by directly managing the use of clinical data science toward the improvement of care. This new site helps us do that,” said Keith J. Dreyer, DO, Ph.D., FACR, ACR DSI Chief Science Officer.
