Enhanced Digital Templating Allows Physicians to Build Precise Surgical Plans

Upgraded Opal-Ortho from Viztek Combines CR/DR, PACS

May 17, 2012 — Viztek announced an upgrade to its Opal-Ortho PACS (picture archiving and communications system) solution for orthopedic practices. The solution offers one single appliance that controls every aspect of orthopedics imaging, integrating the digital radiography (DR) or computed radiography (CR) solution and the PACS for optimal efficiency.

The Opal-Ortho suite is ideal for orthopedic practices of all sizes and allows them to grow without any additional hardware. It can house 100,000 imaging studies, enough for several years of continuous operation. Many practices currently utilize multiple appliances for PACS, CR/DR and electronic medical records (EMR) interfacing, and need to link them together to ensure each system can properly interface. This manual linking typically introduces complexity and possibility for errors.

The Opal-Ortho solution also offers orthopedic practices the opportunity to integrate mobile devices such as iPads or Android devices, giving them the ability to easily display images to patients and colleagues.

In the upgrade, the suite’s digital templating was improved, and now provides physicians with immediate calculations to help them create more precise surgical plans before operating. It significantly streamlines the measurement process, allowing the physician to see more patients and reduce any possible operational delays. Another efficiency gain is found in the system’s automatic learning protocol, an intelligent feature that actively learns the doctor’s system usage patterns and allows them to perform key functions with less mouse clicks and fewer drag-and-drop actions.

“Our ‘one box’ functionality means practices can now have the whole suite in a small footprint, with the added bonus of simple mobile device connectivity,” said Steve Deaton, vice president of sales for Viztek. “Patients that need such care often face tough news and decisions, and there is a level of personal care and attention to detail that comes when doctors can show patients images up close. We estimate the typical practice can save 15 minutes a day per physician through improved efficiency, a number that ultimately allows patients to receive more personal care.”
