Columbus Radiology, a provider of interpretation services, is launching a new mobile application that allows physicians to review ordering guidelines and make imaging procedure decisions from the convenience of their smartphone.
“The app offers a quick and easy-to-use tool for referencing ordering guidelines,” Amanda McNutt, director of clinical operations and business development at Columbus Radiology, said. “Physicians increasingly rely on handheld devices to find clinical information, and this is another tool to help them provide better, more efficient patient care.”
The website, which acts as a mobile application, works on Android and iPhone handheld devices as well as iPad and other tablets. It offers a graphic interface that matches patient indication with the pros and cons of each procedure. A search option feature allows users to enter a specific term or browse indications by body part. The website also provides one-click calling to a live radiologist 24/7 for report discussion or imaging procedure consultation.
“Collaboration between radiologist and the referring physician is essential,” Jason Fox, radiologist and president of Columbus Radiology, said. “Primary care physicians are currently faced with the challenge of deciphering new imaging technology and the pressure to reduce radiation exposure for patients. Smartphone ordering guidelines help referring physicians to order the most appropriate imaging exams for their patients. This allows patients to be tested and diagnosed appropriately on the first visit to the imaging department.”
While the website was designed with primary care professionals in mind, it is also a learning resource for medical students and residents. Currently, Columbus Radiology is partnering with hospitals and other organizations to implement licensed versions of the application.
