November 18, 2011 — Grayhill Inc. will announce the launch of their Instinct technology at the 97th annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago on Nov. 27, 2011. Instinct is a set of multi-touch gesture recognition software tools that, when integrated with Grayhill physical components, creates more intuitive human interface solutions.

Gesture recognition has become commonplace in a wide range of electronics including mobile phones and tablet computers. Grayhill’s Multi-Touch Ring Encoder with Instinct brings gesture recognition to the controls of medical imaging devices. A touchpad on the device’s surface recognizes multiple finger touches and motions and transmits them via USB to a CPU that decodes the gestures and carries them out on the display. This way, the user gets the benefits of gesture recognition without ever touching the display.

For more precise control, a ring encoder encircles the touchpad and the entire knob can be pressed. The rotary function allows the user to scroll through options and the pushbutton selects the desired setting. With the ring encoder’s implementation, other devices such as joysticks, touchpads, trackballs and pushbuttons can be eliminated. This results in a compact user panel that is intuitive to use as well as easy to clean, maintaining a more sterile environment.

The device will aid in the design of uncluttered, easy-to-clean instrumentation for the following applications: ultrasound equipment, medical imaging controllers, patient monitors, surgery equipment and molecular imaging.

The Multi-Touch Ring Encoder will be available to view and discuss at RSNA 2011.
