Philips Offers First Ambient Experience With PET/CT

November 7, 2011 -- Philips combines its Ambient Experience with Gemini TF Big Bore positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) at Sparks Regional Medical Center, Arkansas’ first hospital, serving a population of more than 350,000 in and around its location in Fort Smith.

When Sparks Regional Medical Center was making the transition from a mobile PET unit to a permanent PET/CT inside the hospital, staff saw an opportunity to further underscore their focus on putting patients at ease. In fact, from the patient valet parking to the warm environment of the lobby filled with comfortable lounge chairs, Sparks goes above and beyond to satisfy patients’ needs and comfort.

Philips Ambient Experience brings light, color and animation to what would normally be a stark room for PET/CT scanning. Patients can choose their own theme, which helps give them a sense of ownership during what is often a frightening experience. When planning the look and feel of the room housing, the GEMINI TF Big Bore PET/CT efforts went beyond color and a skylight. A Philips design team took a careful look at the space and came up with a comprehensive design to foster patient comfort along with improved workflow.

“Everything in the room was thoughtfully placed to allow our clinicians easy access to everything we need, all while cleverly hiding what patients don’t need to see,” said Deborah Lashley, director of imaging at Sparks Regional Medical Center. “It’s all about efficiency and comfort.  Having PET and CT together makes it possible to get both the
anatomical and biological data of the tumor in just one exam. The large bore allows a variety of patient positioning and accommodates large patients, and Ambient Experience provides a soothing patient environment.”

Ambient Experience design elements are also featured in two uptake rooms where patients are prepared for the imaging process before moving into the PET/CT imaging space.
