July 24, 2007 — The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) announced the receipt of a second grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to identify, develop and disseminate a set of practical, easy-to-use tools that will help hospitals redesign delivery of care to improve the quality and safety of patient care on medical and surgical units.
This supplemental grant of more than $600,000 brings the grant total for the “Disseminating Transforming Care at the Beside (TCAB)” project to over $1.5 million. The grant will allow AONE to share insights from the TCAB project, a multi-year collaborative between RWJF and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, with 68 hospitals nationwide. The original grant received in January 2007 was to support 50 hospitals and the new funds will support the additional 18 hospitals and other project-related activities.
All participating hospitals will be taught the basics of the TCAB innovation process with a focus on nurse managers and team training. The program engages nurses to develop interventions and design new processes that improve care and leads to better staff morale.
“By assisting us with this additional funding, the Foundation continues to demonstrate its support of AONE’s leadership in transforming the delivery of patient care,” said Linda Q. Everett, PhD, RN, CNAA, BC, FAAN, president of AONE. “The additional funding has enabled us to achieve our goal of sharing the important lessons learned from TCAB with more hospitals.”
“Nurses are professionals who traditionally aren’t asked their opinion on how to fix problems or improve care,” said Sue Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior program officer at RWJF. “TCAB creates an environment where nurses are engaged to think creatively about making changes, share ideas and be part of the process that improves patient safety and satisfaction.”
At this time, all 68 hospitals have been selected.
