February 29, 2008 – Imaging Dynamics Company Ltd. (IDC) said that Halifax Biomedical has selected IDC’s X1590 as the DR component for an imaging product suite currently under development for conducting orthopedic clinical trials for Roentgen Steriophotogrametric Analysis (RSA).

Under a Canadian federal grant, Halifax Biomedical will interface its calibration technology with IDC’s DR system and analytical software from Medis Specials of Holland to create one of the first standardized, fully digital RSA suite, according to IDC. The system reportedly will measure the stability of orthopaedic implants to a fraction of a millimeter and will be exhibited in the IDC booth #5430 at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) conference being held in San Francisco, March 5-7, 2008.

Halifax Biomedical delivers specialized contract research services and develops RSA-related imaging equipment for orthopaedic clinical trials, said IDC. The product suite currently under development is designed to measure the stability of orthopaedic implants. Identifying the migration of implants into bone can be predictive of future failure of the implant due to aseptic loosening. RSA is also useful in assessing spinal fusion and fracture healing. Results from the first test of the product suite are expected to be available by the end of March, 2008. This test will be the backbone that allows expansion to a larger clinical network that will allow remote collaboration on standardized imaging systems.
