November 3, 2010 – A program has been launched to raise awareness among radiographers and radiological technicians of they role they play in managing radiation dose exposure. The “Are you DoseWise?” program was developed by Philips and the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT).

The first ISRRT Dosewise Radiographer of the Year will be awarded at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting in Chicago.

"Radiographers around the world are linked by a common goal, that is, to provide the highest quality medical images using the lowest achievable dose of radiation,” said Michael Ward, Ph.D., president of the ISRRT. “The patients count on our professional skill and educational preparation to carry out our work."

At the 2010 ISRRT World Conference in Australia, the organization focused on the theme that radiographers and radiological technologists play an essential role in safely delivering the best clinical care. The key message was that quality in diagnostic radiology not only requires good images, but also following the As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principle.

At the heart of the 'Are you DoseWise' campaign is an interactive website that brings together key learning material, discussion opportunities and leading global references. It is also home to the entry for the ISRRT Dosewise Radiographer of the Year. Entries will be open until Nov. 12, 2010. Radiographers will have to complete the DoseWise quiz and then answer in 250 words or less, what they have done to improve patient safety by managing exposure to dose.
