September 29, 2010 — Quinnipiac University has selected a new picture archiving and communications system (PACS) for its innovative diagnostic imaging educational center, which provides students in a wide range of imaging-related medical specialties with hands-on experience using a full suite of state-of-the-art technology. The center also provides a focal point for the university’s mummy research project and other innovative nontraditional imaging programs.

Rivaling many university hospital imaging facilities, the Quinnipiac center includes a complete installation of today’s modalities and IT applications and is an integral part of the university’s educational program for imaging technologists (RT), masters RT students and radiologist assistants, as well as for nurses, occupational therapists and other medical professionals who frequently use medical images. It also will provide a unique radiology training opportunity for the university’s school of medicine, scheduled to open in 2012.

Quinnipiac is also renowned for its unique imaging forensics and bioanthropology programs and is in the forefront of a worldwide network involved in the scanning and analysis of Egyptian mummies. It has a growing database of computed tomography (CT) and X-ray images of mummified remains. The new CoActiv Exam-PACS will help the center manage the mummy images gathered from around the world. The PACS also will be used for radiology training.

The CoActiv installation provides the full CoActiv Exam-PACS Suite, including Exam-Server, Exam-Vault, Exam-Sender, Exam-Filer and Exam-3D software (powered by the Biotronics3D visualization engine). The university center will have a 5.5 TB server and be fully licensed for campus-wide enterprise image viewing.
