GE Healthcare's Voluson E8 ultrasound system.

May 18, 2010 - Fetal nuchal translucency (NT) thickness is the standard of care in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) for detecting increased nuchal translucency, a factor associated with increased risk of aneuploidy, fetal structural malformations, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

At the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s (ACOG) 2010 annual clinical meeting in San Francisco, May 15-19, it is a topic of discussion at GE Healthcare's booth. The company has added to its arsenal of ultrasound automation tools, SonoNT, standardized nuchal translucency (NT) measurements on the Voluson E8 and Voluson E6 ultrasound systems. SonoNT joins a suite of automation tools focused on early detection rather than late diagnosis.

Another ultrasound innovation for the Voluson E8 and Voluson E6 is the expansion of SonoRender Start, which now can automate 3-D imaging and help speed and simplify access to surface structure image rendering during 3-D examinations.

Also on display is MR guided Focused Ultrasound, a noninvasive treatment of uterine fibroids. The system, ExAblate by InSightec, is the only commercially available such device in the United States and is exclusive to GE Healthcare’s MRI systems. The procedure typically requires no hospitalization or general anesthesia.
