The Dilon 6800 Gamma Camera, optimized for molecular breast imaging, boasts Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) as a complement to mammography for early detection of breast cancer.
BSGI is a molecular breast imaging procedure that captures the metabolic activity of breast lesions through radiotracer uptake. A small amount of tracing agent is delivered to a patient, which is then absorbed by the body’s cells. The tracing agent emits invisible gamma rays, which according to the company, are detected by the Dilon 6800 Gamma Camera and translated into a digital image of the breast. Because of their higher metabolic activity, the cancerous cells absorb a greater amount of the tracing agent and are revealed as "hot spots", reportedly helping physicians better differentiate cancerous from noncancerous cells.
