Radiation Shield Technology Cuts Costs, Time

December 20, 2010 – A new shielding solution is now available that is designed to fit around a radiation therapy system. Total Shield, by Nelco, makes it possible to fit a TomoTherapy radiation therapy system into an existing under-shielded vault or treatment room.

This is especially useful where there may not be enough space to install necessary shielding for modern intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) devices. Instead of adding shielding in the walls, the Total Shield enclosure is designed to wrap around the system itself.

By taking this approach, customers can potentially save hundreds of thousands of dollars in shielding costs and eliminate the months it takes to install conventional shielding solutions. It can be installed in just a matter of days and because the Total Shield can be easily removed, it can be reused.

Total Shield's design and small footprint allow hospitals and cancer centers to easily adopt cutting-edge cancer care technology in places where other solutions may not be feasible.
