November 14, 2008 - Royal Philips Electronics said the cardiovascular X-ray business of its healthcare division was recently recognized as the No. 1 vendor in the Cardiovascular /Interventional Radiology X-ray Study category by KLAS, an independent research firm specializing in monitoring and reporting performance of healthcare medical equipment, software, and professional services vendors.

KLAS said the Philips Allura Xper FD20 technology ranked first in overall performance in the cardiovascular/interventional radiology X-ray study, published in August 2008.

Philips' leadership in interventional cardiology and interventional radiology can be attributed to developing solutions that allow physicians to perform both interventional cardiology exams and interventional radiology exams in the same setting.

Patients undergo diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, generally referred to as catheterization procedures or specials procedures, depending on the nature of the disease that is being treated. Often patients with cardiovascular disease also suffer from vascular disease outside the heart. Treating patients in a single procedure, and allowing for physicians to check for multiple diseases, is the main function of the Allura Xper FD20 multipurpose CV X-ray lab.

The KLAS study focused on vendors that market multipurpose cardiovascular X-ray equipment. In order to qualify, a product must be designed for use in the cath lab as well as interventional radiology. Pure cath lab units and pure angiography units were not included in this study. The three vendors in the main body of this research - GE, Philips and Siemens - all have data from at least 15 validated, unique health care provider organizations.
