Advanced Speech Recognition by M*Modal Enables MEDxConnect™ Users to Create High-Productivity Reporting and Increases Clinical Documentation Accuracy

November 16, 2012 - Compressus announced the integration of M*Modal's Speech Understanding technology with the MEDxConnect suite of healthcare interoperability and workflow solutions from Compressus. Specifically, the integration brings a next-generation speech platform to MEDxConnect users, providing flexible reporting capabilities and superior clinical documentation functions that increase productivity and produce cost savings for customers.

The unique interoperability solution provided by M*Modal and MEDxConnect was developed for initial installation at Outpatient Imaging Affiliates (OIA) in Franklin, Tenn., to meet the requirements of their progressive business model. As a result of this first phase of the implementation, OIA has been rapidly trending down in report turnaround time from 10 hours to less than two hours from the time the patient checks in to delivering the final report to the referring physician. The M*Modal-Compressus partnership has afforded OIA the opportunity to continue to stay competitive in the midst of the ongoing challenges in healthcare and imaging.

Hospitals and health systems continue to be faced with the challenge of increasing documentation requirements. The integration of M*Modal's Speech Understanding gives radiologists using the Compressus unified worklist a speech recognition tool that adapts to their workflow and offers many time-saving features that result in higher reporting throughput, better documentation, and enhanced profitability. Speech Understanding also automatically creates structured, encoded data in addition to electronic text, enabling many downstream uses and actions to be triggered such as documentation improvement alerts, critical test result alerts and more.

"Speech understanding technology is all about improving physician productivity, giving them a platform that's both intuitive and accurate in capturing clinical narratives," said M*Modal President Michael Finke. "M*Modal's expertise in speech recognition and cloud For technologies provides radiologists using Compressus solutions with incredible flexibility, accuracy and time savings in creating workflows and reporting."

Designed to improve physician productivity, reduce Enterprise expansion costs and improve patient care and safety, MEDxConnect offers a vendor-neutral way to address interoperability and workflow simultaneously, so physicians can access critical information and images from anywhere in the enterprise and act on them with unprecedented efficiency and ease of use. MEDxConnect serves as an information hub that facilitates the easy exchange of patient information between data acquisition, medical imaging and clinical systems. Compressus has expanded on its user preference approach and MEDxConnect's flexible, vendor-neutral platform allows users to connect third party systems as a plug in. For example, billing systems, voice recognition, peer review, and other third party services easily plug into the MEDxConnect Enterprise Service Bus through web services and other methods of connectivity.

"Optimizing workflow efficiencies in a comprehensive way demands the best technologies that are intelligently integrated," said Janine Broda, Chief Marketing Officer of Compressus. "M*Modal gives us not only the best speech and natural language understanding technology, but also strong skills in integration and partnering that we require."

The MEDxConnect System supports best of breed subspecialty solutions and worklist customization. Using a vendor-neutral, highly scalable architecture, healthcare providers in virtually any department or subspecialty can access all of the patient information they need to make accurate diagnoses, including medical records, images, lab results, medications and more - from anywhere in the Enterprise - using a single worklist. The worklist shows and sorts orders according to priority, modality and other search criteria, enabling users to customize workflow and improve efficiency. It includes all relevant patient and order information, such as electronic notes and scanned documents, as well as prior studies and reports for comparison. The solution also enables workload balancing, allocating studies among available physicians according to user-defined rules, such as body part, modality, exam status or time.
