The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an approval letter for the Planmed Clarity 2-D full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system on Dec. 28, 2017, the company announced. The Planmed Clarity 2-D system is a digital mammography system that provides high image quality, optimal ergonomics and excellent usability for breast cancer screenings, according to the company. In addition to screening mammograms, the system supports diagnostic work-up examinations and biopsy procedures.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an approval letter in may for the Planmed Verity CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scanner’s MaxScan maxillofacial imaging option. Planmed Verity is designed for imaging of anatomies within upper and lower extremities, as well as the maxillofacial region. The system utilizes CBCT technology with a flat panel detector, which provides high-resolution volumetric images. It is a compact, stand-alone unit from which all stages of the imaging process can be performed. Planmed Verity’s MaxScan imaging option enables flexible CBCT imaging of the regions encompassing the jaw and face.

Criticism and confusion notwithstanding regarding the appropriateness of X-ray mammography as the gold standard in breast screening, digital mammography will continue to provide an important cog in the wheel of breast care pathways. The United States, some may say, is a slowing market for the digital mammography imaging modality due to a gradual decrease in the number of breast imaging facilities, reduction in replacement rates of mammography units and the possible linkage of reduced procedure numbers to the 2009 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations.
