Feb. 8, 2007 - Nearly 95 percent of patients admitted to hospital intensive care units are affected by anemia. Consequently, these patients receive a large number of red blood cell (RBC) transfusions in order to restore proper hemoglobin levels.

New research shows that alternative treatments may lead to fewer transfusions, conserving critical blood supplies in hospitals. The report is published in Seminars in Dialysis.

Feb. 8, 2007 - U.S. medical researchers say human skin -- the largest organ in the body -- is a kind of zoo, and some of the inhabitants are quite novel.

Scientists at New York University School of Medicine took swabs from the forearms of six healthy individuals to study the bacterial populations in human skin. They found evidence of 182 species of bacteria, 8 percent of which were unidentified species that had never before been described.

Feb. 9, 2007 — Blockages in arteries that carry blood to the brain are clearly visible to physicians using contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) angiography, according to a study in the February issue of Radiology published by the Radiological Society of North America.

Eighty patients (44 men and 36 women) with suspected arterial occlusive disease were included in the study, which compared the performance of contrast-enhanced MR angiography to DSA and CT angiography. Two independent readers evaluated the images.

Feb. 7, 2006 - Allscripts announced that The Johns Hopkins Hospital has selected HealthMatics ED Emergency Department Information System from Allscripts to automate administrative and patient care processes in its Emergency Department and urgent care center. Allscripts valued the agreement at approximately $900,000.

Feb. 7, 2007 - Pulmonary and critical care specialists at UC Davis Health System are investigating a new, minimally invasive treatment for those suffering with advanced widespread emphysema. The study is part of an international, multi-center clinical trial involving 12 institutions.

Called the EASE(TM) (Exhale® Airway Stents for Emphysema) trial, the study focuses on a procedure called airway bypass, which creates ways for air trapped in the lungs to escape, thereby relieving symptoms of emphysema, such as shortness of breath.

FEBRUARY 7, 2007 - Creating the largest wireless outpatient cardiac monitoring company in the nation, CardioNet plans to acquire PDSHeart, Inc. The acquisition is expected to close in March 2007.

PDSHeart’s line of cardiac event monitors and related services will be added to CardioNet’s real-time, wireless mobile cardiac outpatient monitoring platform, marketed as the CardioNet System.

PDSHeart will operate as a subsidiary of CardioNet, with its corporate offices in West Palm Beach, FL. CardioNet’s corporate headquarters are located in San Diego, CA.

February 7, 2007 - Frost & Sullivan selected Toshiba as the recipient of the 2006 Frost & Sullivan Market Penetration Leadership Award in the North American computed tomography (CT) market, as Toshiba has rapidly become a major medical imaging modality vendor in MRI, CT, Xray vascular and ultrasound markets, experiencing double-digit growth rates across the board.

Toshiba captured 19 percent of CT market revenues in 2005 in a highly competitive North American market and developed an edge particularly in cardiology and oncology.
