MRI Reaches into Numerous Arenas

This article appeared as an introduction to the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems chart that appeared in the October 2010 issue of Imaging Technology News.

Of the many ongoing efforts to minimize dose to healthy tissue and target radiation to hit only tumors, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) is one of those at the forefront. New features and software are being offered and updated by major systems vendors, as IGRT is being used to help treat cancers throughout the body.

Computed tomography (CT) virtual simulation systems allow 3-D viewing and planning along with verification images to achieve the same level of treatment simulation as with radiotherapy (RT) simulation. CT offers an improvement over conventional simulation because of its 3-D visualization, only one session is needed with the patient and volume markup can be done without the patient being present.
How to pick a teleradiology company.

Teleradiology service companies have become an accepted part of the image-reading landscape in the United States, with general estimates suggesting that about half of U.S. radiology practices use their services.

October 4, 2010 — A new tabletop computed radiography (CR) system is designed to provide rapid image access to help increase both the speed and accuracy of patient diagnosis. This compact imaging system is targeted for use in independent imaging centers, clinics, multi-physician offices, as well as chiropractic and veterinary facilities.

October 4, 2010 — Park Avenue Family Practice of Yonkers, N.Y., is adding a U-Arm digital radiography (DR) system to support its increased X-ray imaging volume.

October 4, 2010 — A new collaboration between researchers at King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Center and a British company is targeting skin cancer with a new type of imaging probe.

October 4, 2010 — AccuDetect Galileo computer-aided detection (CAD) software for mammography has received CE (Conformité Européenne) mark.

October 4, 2010 — A non-invasive, radiation-free pulmonary imaging system has been launched in the United States. The VRIxp lung imaging system is designed to aid in diagnosis and monitoring in the emergency department (ED).

October 1, 2010 — A new proton therapy center will open in the suburban Chicago area later this month, slated to begin treating patients November 1. Imaging Technology News editors were among a group of journalists given a pre-opening tour of the ProCure facility, affiliated with Central DuPage Hospital, on September 30.
