October 1, 2023 — The 2023 Abstract Award winners have been announced by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) during its 65th Annual Meeting, ASTRO 2023, being held Oct. 1-4 in San Diego, CA. Winners are chosen based on their peer reviewed scores and final abstract review by the Annual Meeting Steering Committee.
Leibel Award
The Steven A. Leibel Award was established in memory of Steven A. Leibel, MD, FASTRO, a former member of the American Board of Radiology (ABR) Board of Trustees and past president of the ABR as well as ASTRO. The American Board of Radiology Foundation provides two award winners with $2,000 each at the ASTRO Annual Meeting. Winners were selected by ASTRO leadership from the abstracts designated as Plenary or Clinical Trials presentations.
The two recipients of this year’s Leibel Award for 2023 are:
Vinai Gondi, MD, Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center, Warrenville, and Northwestern Medicine Proton Center, for “Primary Endpoint Results of NRG CC003: Phase IIR/III Trial of Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation (PCI) with or without Hippocampal Avoidance (HA) for Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC).”
Bradford Hoppe, MD, MPH, FASTRO, Mayo Clinic Florida, “Consolidative Radiotherapy in Place of Autologous Stem Cell Transplant in Patients with Low-Risk Relapsed/Refractory (R/R) Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (cHL) Treated with Nivolumab plus Brentuximab Vedotin: CheckMate 744.”
International Abstract Award
The international award is designed to foster continuing medical education, assist in career development and help establish relationships with ASTRO members who may serve as scientific mentors to the recipient. Only one award is given each year to candidates who receive the highest score among applicants. The award includes an honorarium, a certificate of recognition and a complimentary registration to the Annual Meeting.
This year’s recipient is Jose Felipe Munoz Lozano, MD, Hospital Universitario, “Development and Evaluation of a Mobile App for Radiotherapy Patient Education.”
Resident Clinical/Basic Science Research Award
This award acknowledges clinical research being performed by young scientists. It is granted to the top resident author of a significant study in radiobiology, clinical research and physics. The award includes an honorarium, a certificate of recognition and a complimentary registration to the Annual Meeting.
The 2023 ASTRO Annual Meeting Award was presented to: Alexander Allen, MD, University of Maryland School of Medicine, “The Impact of a Precision Medicine Navigator on Inequities Associated with Utilization of Genomic Tests in Black Men with Prostate Cancer.”
Nurse Abstract Award
This award is designed to promote clinical research among radiation oncology nurses. Up to two awards are presented to the highest rated abstracts of a submitter with a nursing designation. The winners receive a certificate of recognition and complimentary registration to the Annual Meeting.
Michelle Wear, MSN, Mayo Clinic, received the 2023 Nurse Abstract Award for “Prompt Pain Relief: Advanced Practice Provider Led Rapid Access Palliative Radiotherapy Clinic.”
