The 2023 Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) Breast Imaging Symposium, SBI 2023, is set for May 4-7 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
April 26, 2023 — The 2023 Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) Breast Imaging Symposium, SBI 2023, is set for May 4-7 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The in-person-only event theme, “Advancing What’s Possible: Better Every Day,” underscores the focus of the program schedule, as symposium planners promote the opportunities to explore ways to advance patient care, including those underserved, enhance their practice and boost both careers and self-care.
More than 60 afternoon educational sessions are planned Thursday thru Saturday to provide information to breast professionals at all career levels with new and original research across all breast imaging modalities. SBI 2023 program planners note that symposium content will be made available on demand at a later date.

Thursday, May 4
The SBI 2023 Symposium Welcome will be delivered by Mimi S. Newell, MD, FACR, FSBI, Emory University School of Medicine, and member of the SBI Board of Directors.
The “Shark Tank: Screening 2030 – My Vision” competition and the “Shark Attack” follows an engaging and educational format. The event will be moderated by Mary S. Newell, MD, FACR, FSBI – Emory University School of Medicine, and follow a game show format, where five presenters will be given 6 minutes to “pitch” their idealized vision of what screening will look like in 2030, along general modality lines: MR, US, CEM, AI, liquid biopsy). The sharks will pose questions for 5 minutes after the presentations.
This session is meant to be lively and playful but still impart information on emerging trends. Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the various breast cancer screening modalities that might be in common use in 2013. Speakers include the following: Wendy B. DeMartini, MD, FSBI – Stanford University School of Medicine; Regina J. Hooley, MD, FSBI – Yale School of Medicine; Jessica W.T Leung, MD, FACR, FSBI – The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Habib Rahbar, MD, FSBI – University of Washington Medical Center; Janice S. Sung, MD, FSBI – Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Newell, incoming SBI President, will also moderate a morning presenter Q&A session.
The panel of “Sharks” include: Paula B. Gordon, OC, OBC, MD, FRCPC, FSBI, Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia; John Lewin, MD, FACR, FSBI, Associate Professor and Chief, Division of Breast Imaging at Yale University School of Medicine, and current SBI President; and SBI Board of Directors member Debra Monticciolo, MD, FACR, FSBI, who is Division Chief, Breast Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
JBI FYI: Journal of Breast Imaging
Also on the first day of SBI 2023, a session will focus on the Journal of Breast Imaging, JBI, the official journal of the SBI and the first journal dedicated to breast imaging. This session will provide an overview of the Journal of Breast Imaging, the types of manuscripts accepted, and opportunities to review for breast imaging. Provide an overview of the Journal of Breast Imaging (JBI), describe the requirements for different types of accepted manuscripts, discuss strategies to be a successful author for JBI, and discuss strategies to be an impactful reviewer for JBI.
Presenting this session will be Sadia Khanani, MD, Director of Women's Imaging at the Millennium Physician Group, along with Wendie A. Berg, MD, PhD, FACR, FSBI, Professor of Radiology at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPMC), and chief scientific advisor for densebreast-info.org, founded by Executive Director JoAnn Pushkin. ITN Senior Editorial Director, Melinda Taschetta-Millane recently interviewed Berg for a “One on One” video discussion on current issues in breast imaging.
In recent news, on April 17, SBI announced that it has named Wendy B. DeMartini, MD, FSBI, as the new Editor in Chief of JBI. DeMartini is the Division Chief, Breast Imaging and Professor, Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. In addition to participating in the Shark Tank Screening, she will also be involved in the “BI-RADS Update: The Edition Formerly Known as Fifth,” and “BI-RADS Scenarios: What’s Your Assessment?” sessions on Sunday, May 7, the final day of the event.
Friday, May 5
Day two will kick off with an all members meeting and induction of the new SBI President, facilitated by SBI current President John Lewin, MD, FACR, FSBI, Yale University School of Medicine.
The SBI 2023 Keynote Lecture: “Insights on the In Situs: New Treatment Paradigms for DCIS and PLCIS,” will be presented by Jame Abraham, MD, Chairman, Department of Hematology and Oncology and Professor of Medicine at Lerner College of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic. Abraham will help attendees to understand the incidence and types of DCIS and PLCIS; review current treatment of DCIS and PLCIS and future treatment options and clinical trials of DCIS and PLCIS.
The SBI 2023 Gold Medal Award Ceremony will recognize Murray Rebner, MD, FACR, FSBI. Dr. Rebner is a senior staff radiologist and former director of the division of breast imaging at Beaumont Health Royal Oak campus. He is a Professor of Radiology and Molecular Imaging at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Dr. Rebner has received numerous awards throughout his career, including distinguished reviewer awards from the journal Radiology, Best Doctors in America award and a Distinguished Service Award from General Electric. His current academic interests include digital breast tomosynthesis and imaging of women who are at high risk for breast cancer. He is a past president of the Society of Breast Imaging. The ceremony will be presided over by John Lewin, MD, FACR, FSBI, Associate Professor and Chief, Division of Breast Imaging at Yale University School of Medicine.
Rebner and Lewin will also participate in a Saturday, May 6 session, “Go For the Gold II: Advice and Insights from SBI Gold Medalists.” Joining him on the panel will be past Gold Medal recipients, including: Carl J. Seeking Work-Life Balance: Burnout and Sustainable Career Development
An insightful session on careers, a Friday, May 5 session, “Work-Life-Money Hacks: The Early to Mid-Career Years” will feature the following presenters: Frank J. Lexa, MD, MBA, FACR – University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC International; and Jay R. Parikh, MD, FRCP(c), FSBI, FACR, FACPE – Department of Breast Imaging, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The session is established to help participants to: understand the impact that poor work/life habits can have on your career, your health and your personal life; develop strategies for sustainable professional development in your career; and avoid common work, health, and financial mistakes that physicians make in the first and second thirds of their careers.
SBI 2023 will also include a Career Fair. According to SBI’s pre-event outreach, the fair, to be held May 4&5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., is for those looking to launch or advance their breast imaging careers, providing the opportunity to meet face-to-face with hiring managers who have open positions. Those interested are asked to register online.
Also on Friday, the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR) will offer an engaging session. “Women in Radiology: Why So Few? Perceptions, Challenges, and Future Opportunities.” The featured panel will include: Harriet B. Borofsky, MD – Hackensack Meridian Health; Stamatia V. Saturday, May 6
Day three will open with Emily F. Conant, MD, FSBI, member of the SBI Board, who serves as Professor and Chief, Division of Breast Imaging, and Vice Chair of Faculty Development, Department of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
The first program on Saturday will be “Maximizing Efficiency, Faster and Better: Biopsies, Reporting, Technologist Workflow,” featuring the following presenters: Louise Miller, RTRM, FSBI – Mammography Educators; Bethany L. Niell, MD, PhD, FSBI – Moffitt Cancer Center; and Jay R. Parikh, MD, FRCP(c), FSBI, FACR, FACPE – Department of Breast Imaging, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
“Best Practice” talks will focus on efficiency, emerging practice paradigms and new ways to work.
SBI 2023 Scientific Abstract Award winner presentations will take place on Saturday, as well, to be moderated by Linda Moy, MD, MD, FSBI, FISMRM, Professor of Radiology at New York University Grossman School of Medicine-NYU Langone Health. Moy is a member of the SBI Board of Directors. A description of results of the scientific research uncovered in the award-winning abstracts will be presented, with input that recognizes the strengths and limitations of the research.
Sunday, May 7
The final day of SBI 2023 will include a BI-RADS Next Edition Sneak Peak, and attendees can also take one more opportunity to “Crack the Case” in the last of several case-based afternoon sessions, undergo basic training at Screening Bootcamp, and gain awareness around malpractice issues.
In addition to two BI-RADS sessions, on updates and scenarios, Sunday will include a session on “Breast Arterial Calcifications: Do They Matter?” to be presented by Laurie R. Margolies, MD, FACR, FSBI – Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (NY).
The closing session, to take place at noon on May 7, will be presented by Mimi S. Newell, MD, FACR, FSBI, who will open the Symposium. Newell will offer concluding remarks, share logistics related to CME credits, and update attendees on the 2024 SBI Symposium.
Artificial Intelligence in Spotlight
During SBI 2023, the role and clinical applications of artificial intelligence in breast screening will be present across multiple educational and scientific sessions, as well as presentations by companies whose technology supports AI in breast imaging. Here is just a sampling.
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Primer is intended to achieve three key learning objectives, according to SBI 2023 Symposium planners: 1) Define key AI terminology, such as deep learning and neural networks; 2) describe the FDA approval process for AI algorithms; and 3) recognize ethical issues that are relevant to the use of AI in breast imaging, such as algorithm bias and resource inequality. This AI Primer session will be presented by the following: Manisha Bahl, MD, MPH, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School; Lisa Mullen, MD, Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; and Robert M. Nishikawa, PhD, FSBI – University of Pittsburgh.
“AI in Screening” will be presented by include a presentation by Linda Moy, MD, FSBI, FACR, FISMRM, New York University Grossman School of Medicine.
A session titled “AI: Clinical Applications” will be presented by Tejas S. Mehta, MD, MPH, FSBI, FACR – UMass Memorial Medical Center/ UMass Chan Medical School; and Sarah (Sally) M. Friedewald, MD, FSBI, FACR – Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Another Scientific Session on AI will be moderated by Elizabeth A. Morris, MD, FACR, FSBI – UC Davis Health, with scientific presentations offering results of original research.
