February 14, 2019 — Medical imaging and visualization company Medivis officially unveiled SurgicalAR, its augmented reality (AR) technology platform for surgical applications, at the 2019 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual meeting, Feb. 11-15 in Orlando, Fla.
Leveraging Microsoft HoloLens, SurgicalAR enables physicians to overlay images directly onto the patient, allowing for superior precision and real-time decision making — in and out of the operating room. Medivis CEO Osamah Choudhry, M.D., noted how surgeons today still rely on 2-D images to display patient data, requiring practitioners to turn their visual attention away from the patient. He added that they are forced to use their imagination to mentally fuse and display data in order to accurately plan and perform surgery with precision, which he called difficult and inefficient.
