Realizing Imaging 3.0 goals requires radiologists to be healthy, engaged and focused


RedRick Technologies, a provider of ergonomic radiology furniture, monitor mounting solutions and reading room design guidance, has released a new educational infographic that highlights the significant risks to radiologist health and diagnostic accuracy from repetitive stress injuries (RSI). This is part of their ongoing effort to educate radiology and healthcare design leaders about the benefits of applying ergonomic principles to all aspects of reading room design and development.

Recent studies have identified the significant presence of RSI's among radiologists. Because RSI's manifest themselves over time, adopting the behavior that prevents them from occurring requires ongoing use of ergonomic equipment as well as behavioral education and training in their proper use. One recent study in the Journal of the American College of Radiology found that greater than 60% of radiologists, who work long hours in reading environments that are not ergonomically optimized, suffer from neck, back and wrist injuries, as well as visual fatigue. These can lead to reduced productivity, lower quality of life and risks to diagnostic accuracy.

"There is a significant and increasing body of evidence identifying the prevalence of workplace injuries caused by radiologists sedentary reading patterns," said Greg Patrick, president of RedRick Technologies. "We want them to understand that the best position any radiologist can work in is the next position they move to." Greg noted, "Our goal is to foster education to the benefit of imaging providers everywhere, as we find education to be broadly lacking. Whether trying to extend the life of existing furniture or considering the purchase of new, proper adjustment and use are necessary to ensure the benefits it affords are realized."
