Nellcor, a unit of Tyco Healthcare, has entered into an agreement with Lyntek for an exclusive worldwide license to certain patented technology developed by its founder and president, Dr. Lawrence Lynn, DO, FCCP. Dr. Lynn is on staff at the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Riverside and Doctors Hospital in Columbus, OH, and is also executive director of the sleep and breathing research institute.
Nellcor plans to utilize Dr. Lynn's patented technology to significantly enhance the clinical utility and diagnostic value of pulse oximetry. Combining the Lyntek technology with Nellcor pulse oximetry algorithms allows much more information to be derived from the oximeter waveform. The additional data may give clinicians earlier insight into changes in patient status, especially in conditions that may contribute to changes in oxygen saturation levels.
The Lyntek technology allows Nellcor to make significant improvements in alarm management. Nellcor's unique SatSeconds alarm management technology — which is integrated into Nellcor bedside pulse oximeters — has successfully enabled clinicians to reduce the frequency of nuisance alarms without sacrificing patient safety. Incorporating Lyntek technology may lead to further refinements in alarm management as Nellcor continues to provide clinicians with relevant new oximetry features.
