September 27, 2007 - Since its beginning more than 20 years ago, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) each October has been dedicated to increasing awareness of breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection.
The NBCAM campaign is composed of 19 national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working in partnership to raise awareness and provide access to screening services.
Approximately one in seven women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer over her lifetime. For that reason the campaign encourages women to take charge of their own breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams, making sure to schedule an annual mammogram, adhering to prescribed treatment, and knowing the facts about recurrence.
Friday, Oct. 19 is National Mammography Day, a day sponsored by the American Cancer Society to encourage women to go on in for mammograms.
