June 12, 2008 – MEDHOST said this past week the University of Virginia Health System chose the MEDHOST Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) to automate its emergency department (ED).
MEDHOST will be integrated with the hospital’s HIS from GE Healthcare and can interface with many other hospital systems to increase patient safety and reduce wait times.
The ED at the University of Virginia Medical Center is the first point of contact for many patients to the health system and receives approximately 61,000 visits annually from Charlottesville, VA, and surrounding areas. The University of Virginia is working with MEDHOST to ensure the security of patient information.
Robert E. O’Connor, M.D., MPH, chair of the department of emergency medicine, said tracking medical records electronically would improve patient care by automating processes and allowing for faster access to records.
“We’ll be able to triage patients more efficiently so they get care more quickly,” he said. “MEDHOST will allow the emergency nurse and emergency physician to effectively work at the bedside with the patient and the medical record – thus ensuring effective, rapid, and safe medical care in the ED. The emergency department staff are excited to offer this service to our patients.”
MEDHOST currently serves more than 160 facilities, including the Baylor Healthcare System in Texas, Catholic Healthcare West in California, Catholic Health System in New York, and Tenet Healthcare Corporation.
