April 28, 2010 - When St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) in Paterson and Wayne, N.J., migrated 30 terabytes of image and patient data for more than 20 different picture archiving and communication system (PACS) solutions, it deployed a virtual environment for high availability and failover.

The 880-bed academic tertiary medical center and state designated trauma center consists of three hospitals and two outpatient imaging centers. With more than 350,000 imaging procedures a year, the old PACS was unable to handle the ever-increasing data storage and distribution requirements.

The hospital, which used Infinitt to handle the migration internally, had millions of images and associated patient data that needed to be moved to the new system as quickly as possible. Bundled in with the new PACS, Infinitt developed a migration gateway for the hospital's network.

Prior to migration, Infinitt customized the migration requirements to peform automatic migration according to predefined rules. The system compared legacy PACS data and Infinitt's Enterprise PACS data for verification, and monitored the migration status of each study in the migration list. Migration of each study is triggered by modality worklists or a manual retrieve request.
The migration tools support predefined rules to cleanse the data during migration and can perform error correction and verification functions. Images that fail to be migrated can be retried for migration automatically or manually at a later time.
