October 15, 2009 - The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) has released its much-anticipated new book: Practical Imaging Informatics: Foundations and Applications for PACS Professionals.

Written by the top SIIM practitioners in imaging informatics, this book is the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and easy-to-use guide to PACS and imaging informatics.

Practical Imaging Informatics is geared to all of the image-intensive specialties across the medical enterprise. It will be most useful to imaging informatics professionals (IIPs), those studying for IIP certification, PACS administrators, IT professionals working in medicine, physicians, and hospital administrators.

Imaging informatics professionals have come to play an indispensable role in modern medicine, and the scope of this profession has grown far beyond the boundaries of the radiology department. A successful IIP must not only understand the PACS itself, but also have knowledge of clinical workflow, a base in image-intensive medical specialties, and a solid IT capability regarding software interactions and networking throughout the health care enterprise.

Since the introduction of certification tests for the IIP position, SIIM recognized that a single source was needed to explain the fundamentals of imaging informatics and to demonstrate how those fundamentals are applied in everyday practice and in the various imaging specialties. Practical Imaging Informatics describes the foundations of information technology and clinical image management, details typical daily operations, and discusses rarer complications and issues.

Written by world-renown experts from the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine, it is an indispensable reference for the practicing IIP, those studying for a certification exam, and any medical imaging professional who needs quick access to the nuts and bolts of imaging informatics.

The book's editor, Barton F. Branstetter IV, MD, says, "I think that readers will be impressed with the layout of the book and the ease with which they can rapidly find critical information. Imaging informatics professionals will be well-served by this textbook both as they are learning their trade, and also once they are comfortably ensconced in their practice."

The book includes suggested resources, personal experiences, key concepts, and an extensive glossary of imaging informatics terms. The book also includes step-by-step outlines and checklists for important tasks. Each of 26 chapters includes Pearls (summary points) and self-assessment questions to help readers test their knowledge and prepare for certification.

Practical Imaging Informatics is published by SIIM in conjunction with Springer. The cost of the 455-page book is $89.95. SIIM members receive a discounted rate of $59.95. Members and non-members may order online by visiting www.siimweb.org/pii.
