November 25, 2008 - SuperSonic Imagine will demonstrate at RSNA the Aixplorer system, a next-generation ultrasound system that uses shearwave elastography for use in breast lesion diagnosis.

Images produced by mammography and conventional ultrasound only produce a qualitative image of the breast, limiting the criteria on which a diagnosis is based. The architecture from SuperSonic Imagine provides a new method of imaging: ShearWave Elastography, according to the company, is quantifiable, reproducible and real-time results.

Through the technique of shear wave imaging, Aixplorer is said to capture information that conventional ultrasound technology cannot. By measuring the motion of the shear wave propagation, Aixplorer produces a quantifiable measurement of tissue elasticity (kilo Pascal), which can aid in the diagnostic process. ShearWave Elastography is a noninvasive procedure, which reportedly gives the physician a quantifiable measure of breast tissue elasticity within seconds. This technology is also user-skill independent, which ensures that each patient’s results are reproducible.
